When Isabelle Legeron founded RAW WINE in 2012, natural wine was a fraction of the cultural force that is today—understood and respected by those in the know but an oddity at best to the general wine drinking public. A decade later, fairs across the U.S. inspired by Legeron’s ethos and legacy, from Third Coast Soif to Karakterre and Encounter, are popping up all over the states. Yet still, RAW WINE remains the touchstone: a festival that exists squarely at the intersection of transparency, sustainability, low-intervention production and responsible farming.
Legeron’s path into natural wine didn’t stem from defiance so much as curiosity, and from realizing how little most people actually knew about what they were drinking and how it was made. As France’s first female Master of Wine, she had climbed to the summit of a famously rigid industry, only to find herself disillusioned by how detached many tastings felt from the wines they showcased. “I’d been to tastings that felt dark and damp and not really reflective of the wines,” she says. “So, I wanted RAW WINE to be an experience representative of the producers who were pouring, and the wines they were making. A real homage to them and their exceptional work.”

What she built wasn’t just about pouring wine; it was about creating a space that was as vibrant, eclectic and exuberant as the growers themselves. Reflecting the values and principles of the winemakers is paramount as well—each fair, whether in New York, Berlin, Paris or Tokyo, serves as a gathering point for growers who farm organically or biodynamically, harvest by hand, and work with little to no intervention in the cellar. “We’re very stringent about vetting,” Legeron notes. “Transparency is everything.”
Over the years, RAW’s commitment has helped shift the culture itself. What was once a niche corner of the wine world is now a global conversation about land, labor and sustainability. “Living wine is back on the up,” Legeron says. “Our fairs are full of young growers who are in their second, or third vintage. There's a whole new generation of people taking over from their families and changing the winemaking and farming practices. There’s such amazing dynamism, energy, and can-do spirit in the natural wine world right now—and it feels very enlivening.”
As RAW WINE returns to New York for 2025, it brings together familiar growers and new faces alike. It remains one of our favorite fairs, a reminder that the future of wine is, and always has been, rooted in connection.
